Col de la Bonette, the highest road in Europe?
A road sign at the foot of the Col de la Bonette claims that it is the highest road in Europe at 2802 m above sea level. Various web sources state this claim is incorrect and put the actual height of the Col at 2715 m. Nevertheless this Alpine road is a great drive which I can recommend tot everyone! Please note that somehow Google Maps has concluded that the road ends on the summit, which is not correct; you can continue driving towards Jausiers and descent on the other side of the mountain. We took this road at the end of september on a beautiful sunny day, but I can imagine that it looks great in every season. We went onwards from Briancon to Geneva on the same day, but frankly that was quite ambitious, I would recommend to take 2 days if you want to reach Geneva. From Briancon you can select a number of interesting directions. Of course you can also drive the route in opposite direction, ending in Nice, for a great overnight stay! Enjoy!
