Großglockner

Situated between the Austrian states of Salzburg and Carinthia, the Großglockner High Alpine Road (toll applies) runs over Fuscher Törl and the Hochtor Pass. The road begins in Bruck in the Salzach Valley to the north and ends in Heiligenblut/Möll Valley to the south. Even though the actual mountain pass is a tunnel, the road is impassable in winter, due to the amount of snow. Ten meters of snow are normal and the highest level ever recorded was 21 meters (1953). The High Alpine Road is therefore only open from May to October and the barriers at the valley station are also closed overnight: depending on the season, "Großglockner" is only open from 5:00 am to 9:30 pm.
