The toll road over the Timmelsjoch was only built in the 1950s. Until then, the 2,474-metre pass was trampled out as an unpaved mule track. The road is opened late in the year, and can only be crossed from June to September. It’s also closed to traffic at night. The switchbacks on the spectacular southern ramp are particularly worth seeing and are a pleasure to drive.
