L.A. Mountains
Towering above Southern California, the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains are a familiar site to LA residents. Fortunately, much of the range is crisscrossed by well-maintained scenic roads, making it the ideal location for a quick road trip from the city.The route begins just north of Downtown LA and heads northward until connecting with the Angeles Crest Highway. The route climbs quickly as it winds its way into the mountains. At Turnout 1, visitors get their first view of the valley below, including breathtaking views of Downtown LA. Cresting near Strawberry Peak, the route turns onto Angeles Forest Highway as it travels above Big Tujunga Dam. The route travels deep into the Angeles National Forest and then doubles back to descend the mountains. The route passes through the historic center of Pasadena before returning to the freeway to complete the trip.
