Black Mountain Pass

The A4069 is an A road which connects Llandovery with Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen in Wales. What is possibly the best road in Wales wrinkles over Black Mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Watch out for stray sheep and sudden hairpins. We approach the Black mountain from the North at Llangadog and immediately as you make your way over the cattle grid on to the start of the road the scenery opens out and you’re greeted with amazing views over the flowing hills of the Brecon Beacons. This is a place where you have to concentrate on the road though, especially with the bonus of potential sheep or horses in the road. You push on up to the top of the hill, through a lovely wide hairpin made famous by car journalist Chris Harris, who drew several black lines on it. Over the top of the mountain and the scenery changes again to even more baron views and the road opens out in front of you giving you the opportunity to stretch the legs of your car a little although you have to be careful of animals on the road. On our run down there were some ponies walking down the road which made things interesting! This road is great because of its location in South Wales and is therefore easy to get from if you’re in London. It has a great range of corners with good visibility and is a great place to enjoy driving.
