Angeles Crest Highway
There are Porsche fans. And then there's Magnus Walker. The first love of the then 12-year old Briton was a Porsche 930, better known as the first 911 Turbo. The first Porsche he ever owned: also a 930, which he acquired a full 15 years after first laying eyes on it at an auto show. He now has more than twenty 911s to his name, most from the years 1964 to 1973.Magnus lives and works in L.A. As a fashion designer, an agent for film locations, a collector and restorer of automotive treasures and generally as a car enthusiast. His favourite stretch of road is only a stone's throw away from his loft in Downtown L.A.: the Angeles Crest Highway (ACH). This is a "scenic byway", i.e. a road primarily designed with the landscape in mind. It is rare to see commercial traffic on this road. The ACH is a branch of California State Route 2. Over a distance of 65 miles or 105 km, it winds its way towards the northeast through the Angeles Forest. It ends at the ski resort of Wrightwood and is one of the highest roads in Southern California. Within one hour, you can travel from L.A. to the Cloud Burst Summit at approx. 2,400 m (7,874 ft.).The further you drive, the more like a European road the ACH becomes. The views are breath-taking, the surface as good as new - what more can you want?
