Alto Adige - Dolomites

PUBLISHED ROUTE IS NOT QUITE RIGHT - from Trento, go via Cembra to Cavalese.*** The climb up to the col St Rocco from Idro is short and steep with a good wide road. The fun starts on the descent from Capovalle - watch out for bikers. Then further long descent past Lake Valvestino, mountain road but few hairpins until you arrive high above Lake Garda with a view over all the lake. Then north along the lake to Riva di Garda. From there, both routes to Trento are good - via Rovereto or Ponte Arche. Up the Val di Cembre to Cavalese there are spectacular views over the surrounding hills and valleys. From Cavalese follow Predazzo, Passo Rolle then Passo Valles. Once in the valley, turn right and follow Marmolada, then Passo Pordoi. These are both must-see routes but the real piece de resistance comes at the end, with the Passo Sella and then Val Gardena, which is a good place to stop with many typical Tyrolien Hostelleries. Tip: Be sure to fill up with petrol at Cavalese. Good walks at Col San Rocco (information board just after the col itself) and Valvenegia - just as the road kicks up, turn right over a bridge to carpark and spectacular hike to the baita segantini.
