Gotthardpass
Since the Middle Ages, the Gotthard Pass (Passo del San Gottardo in Italian) has been contributing to the acceleration of the European north-south link, making this major Alpine pass extremely busy. The Gotthard axis over the Gotthard massif or through the tunnel below it forms a direct transport link through the Central Alps, as it only has to navigate one significant ridge in order to cross the entire Alps. While the Gotthard tunnel is open all-year-round, the traditional crossing over the 2,106-meter high pass is closed from November to May.
