From Clermont-Ferrand to Volvic
France is beautiful. And full of winding roads. Every year, the mountain stages of the Tour de France showcase this fact impressively. The fact that fans of bends and hairpins really do get their money's worth here is proven by the presence of a second international event: the Mont-Dore car race. At this race in the FIA European Hill Climb Championship, famous for its spectacular hill climbs, the aim is to cover the course, which is a little over 5 km (ca. 3 miles) in length, in the shortest period of time in time trial mode. With countless overall victories throughout the 60-year long history of the championship, Porsche has created quite an impressive legacy. A close relation of the very first GTS competed here: the 904/8 RS Bergspyder. A race car based on the 904 Coupé, better known as the Carrera GTS. However, Mont-Dore is only one leg on our route. Its starting point is the region's capital, Clermont-Ferrand. The most important company in this city is tyre manufacturer and Porsche partner, Michelin. From here, you set off on your journey through the Auvergne region, which is famous for its lakes and unique landscape. The most famous landmark is without doubt Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano, which has become world famous as the logo of a particular French mineral water. All in all, a route that impresses with its unique combination of history, beautiful countryside and emotive appeal.
