Elan Valley

The Elan Valley is a river valley situated to the west of Rhayader, in Powys, Wales. It’s often known as the Welsh Lake District and it covers 70 square miles of lake and countryside. Our start point for this route is at the bottom of the dam in Elan Village by crossing a bridge over River Elan then climbing the hill up to the top of the first Dam, Caban Coch Dam. We’re immediately greeted with amazing views of water flowing over the dam into the valley below and sun glinting off the water in the reservoir. The road is tight with a cliff face to one side and a wall to the other side, but there’s still lots of driving enjoyment to be had. This is a road less about ambitious driving and more about enjoying the experience of being in amazing scenery and the flowing corners which present themselves before you.The road gives you a few choices in which way to go, with the options to cross over a few of the dams. Ultimately you want to end up on the B4574 to enjoy the quiet roads which follow Afron Elan (the river which fills the reservoirs). A highlight of this bit of road are two hairpins where you can exit with full power! This road is great if you want to take it a bit easier and enjoy amazing views.
