Straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border, the Great Smoky Mountains are home to some of the most impressive mountain scenery east of the Rockies. Linking three of the region’s most legendary roads, this loop drive offers an incredible combination of bends, sweeping curves and tight corners.Starting near the entrance of the iconic Newfound Gap Road, the route climbs 3000 feet into the heart of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The road then merges onto US Route 19 near Bryson City, home of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, before heading south to skirt the Georgia border. Turning north agian, the route enters the Cherohala Skyway, known in motorsport circles for its sweeping bends and spectacular views. After peaking at over 5249 ft. (1600 m), the road descends again to pass through the most famous section of US Route 129—the byzantine “Tail of the Dragon”.
